| Design Tips: Living Large in Small Spaces |
 |
|
By simply using the right pieces in our homes and offices, we can often make a small space feel much larger. Try these ideas:
Add height to a room with tall, stately pieces of furniture to raise the eye. You can also use a tall floor lamp like a torchiere, or even a sculpture.
Hang art a bit higher in a small room.
When purchasing furniture, opt for the rounded look instead of squared-off pieces; the softer corners lend themselves better to flowing easily from one space to another.
Though the furniture should feel light, don't confuse or clutter the area with a leggy look. Too much furniture on legs will look busy. And don't forget about the tables, a cocktail table with a sturdy base is more family-friendly.
Pull a color or two from room to room with paint, window treatments, accessories or rugs to keep your eye moving.

| Feng Shui: Make the Most of Small Spaces |
 |
|
Feng Shui is all about using resources wisely. New trends in home building and design are geared towards smaller but better spaces. Less space, used more efficiently is a better overall plan. Here are some simple tips to make a small space live large:
Subtract in order to add. Remove all nonessential furniture and accessories to streamline the room and add more visual space.
For lighting, use wall-and ceiling-mounted light fixtures to leave the floor less encumbered.
Paint the entire space one color to avoid unnecessary lines.
Raise the roof- not literally, but optically. Use paneling or paper with a vertical direction, or try a band of color just below the ceiling or crown molding to raise the eye.
Make the windows taller by extending the window treatment above the top of the frame. Today some people are hanging their drapes just below the crown!
Keep consistent with the floor coverings throughout the room. Use carpet, tile or wood.

Personal Note from Melanie |
|
|
|
Summer just flew by with design projects, travel and fun. I spent a week yachting off the coast of Maine where I saw many ideas for my lake and vacation home projects. I also enjoyed a long weekend in Vegas which is actually quite a design style-setting city these days. I really enjoyed seeing the new architecture in those sunny, Nevada skies! I also visited friends in Tampa, where a southern coastal vernacular rules. It is charming to see how different climates inspire different looks.
I am busy preparing to host the Interior Design conference later this month. I am also taking a rare opportunity to redo my own bathrooms. I have lots of great new ideas. Call me and let's talk about your place.
